The Night Before School Starts: Butterflies, Blueprints, and the Beauty of New Beginnings

There’s something sacred about the night before school starts.

Not just one night, but two.
The night before teachers return, and the night before students do.

Even now, years after I packed up my classroom and stepped into district leadership, I still feel it. That mix of anticipation, excitement, and just a touch of nerves. The same butterflies that used to flutter in my stomach when I arranged desks into cooperative learning pods now show up when I refresh and roll over systems, triple-check device inventories, or send one last all-staff message to rally the team.

Because the truth is, the night before school starts is never just a night.
It’s a culmination. A celebration. A system humming behind the scenes. A signal of all the work that’s been happening, quietly, methodically, relentlessly, long before the first bell rings.

From Freshly Waxed Floors to Fresh Starts

As a district leader, my team and I have been preparing all summer. You won’t always see it on social media, but it’s there in every checklist, every cabinet restock, every connection made behind the scenes, and every wall freshly painted. Our custodians have been hard at work scrubbing every corner. Our tech teams have updated systems, deployed devices, and resolved those can’t-plan-for-it problems that always pop up. Administrators and support staff have onboarded new team members, finalized transportation routes, and layered schedules with precision.

And still, every single year, no matter how many Gantt charts and systems we build, it’s a little bit of a scramble. Why? Because we’re not just preparing buildings. We’re preparing for people.

Butterflies in Every Role

The night before teachers return, I mentally scroll through the images of iterations of my classroom with a familiar twinge of nostalgia. I remember that joy. The freshly laminated desk name tags. The meticulous color-coded labeling systems. The welcome signs and affirmation walls. That tender hope that your new group of students will find their place and feel seen from day one.

As I reminisce, I feel a flicker of envy. Not because I want to go back, but because there’s something uniquely magical about setting up a space with students in mind. It’s an act of love and vision. It’s the ultimate gesture of “I’ve been waiting for you.”

And then, there’s the night before students return. That’s when the butterflies really take flight.

Because whether you’re a teacher, a tech director, a food services manager, or a superintendent, what we do is for them. And we only get one first day.

When Systems Meet Sentiment

In district leadership, it’s easy to get swept up in logistics. But I’ve learned that the most effective systems are the ones designed for people, not around them. That every data dashboard and work order system should ultimately point back to what matters most: welcoming students and staff into spaces that feel ready, intentional, and full of possibility.

Systems thinking isn’t just for efficiency. It’s for impact. And on the night before school starts, I feel the weight and wonder of that responsibility.

A Little Bit of Guilt, A Whole Lot of Grace

I’d be lying if I said it’s all excitement. The night before school starts also brings a wave of mom-guilt.

My own kids’ school supply shopping is often last-minute, and their supplies may not be perfectly labeled. And while I’ve helped ensure our district is ready for thousands of students and staff, I sometimes wish I had a bit more bandwidth to slow down and soak in the moment with my own.

But maybe this, too, is part of leading out loud:
Knowing when to extend grace. Knowing that readiness isn’t just about the perfectly sharpened pencils; it’s about showing up with hope.

What I Hope You Remember This Year

So here’s what I carry into each new year, whether I’m walking the halls of a school, reviewing implementation dashboards, or hugging my boys tight before they head to class:

✨ Fresh starts are a gift, no matter your role.
✨ Systems matter, but people always come first.
✨ The butterflies? They mean you still care. That’s the point.

To every teacher making your classroom a safe space, every school staff member preparing behind the scenes, every leader trying to hold it all together, and every parent doing your best while the world spins fast:

Happy night before. Let’s make this year matter.
